What is Barbershop?

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PRESERVATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF BARBER SHOP SINGING IN AMERICA is devoted to promoting, preserving and enjoying a special form of harmony known as barbershop. Technically speaking, barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody. The lead sings the melody, with the tenor harmonizing above the lead, the bass and baritone below. The common use of the Dominant 7th chord gives barbershop its distinctive, "full" sound. The lead singer can sing the song all the way through with good quality. Our lyrics sound like they were written back then and feel "down home". The chords fit the ear singer's expectations.
